All New Totally Updated-Jersey City NJ Sues In Federal Court To Stop spectra's gas pipeline

This is Really Scary!

From Bayonne to Hoboken, spectra's controversial natural gas transportation pipeline is expected to start pumping gas November 1st by Joseph R. Vena/The Jersey Journal October 24, 2013

Construction and testing are finished. Now this gas pipeline will go into service next month, with gas flowing  through Bayonne, Jersey City and offshore Hoboken.

The spectra pipeline is expected to pump 800 million cubic feet of gas a day, starting in Linden and eventually making its way to Manhattan, the completion of the $857 million project.

In December 2012, Jersey City filed a lawsuit in Federal Court to halt construction of spectra's proposed pipeline.

It hasn't been heard yet. I read the news every day awaiting the Court's decision so I know it hasn't been settled yet. Jersey City is still waiting the Federal Courts pending decision concerning the overturning of FERC's decision.

On June 28 2012, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) granted approval to spectra to proceed with construction of the pipeline and ok'd spectra's original proposal.

Incredibly; spectra wants to run the Manhattan portion of the pipeline from, Liberty State Park in Jersey City, past the Statue Of Liberty, Ellis Island, Castle Garden (War of 1812 Era Fort Clinton And America's first immigrant receiving center), The Holland Tunnel, The New Jersey Turnpike, etc and off Hoboken's pristine shoreline, into Manhattan's West Village. Spectra laying a pipeline to bring FRACKED gas into the West Village

This is crazy!

I wrote this diary because I love New York City, Jersey City and they really turned Hoboken into a beautiful city. I have many friends in Manhattan and Jersey City.

I don't know how spectra got a permit for this project to begin with.

Considering the large number of people all over Jersey City, NYC and with the West Village's congestion, allowing spectra's gas pipeline in this densely populated area, is totally reckless and irresponsible!

I realize that, someone does not care about us at all!

All New Totally Updated-Jersey City NJ Sues In Federal Court To Stop spectra's gas pipeline

Jersey City has filed with the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in Washington, D.C. a Petition for Review, challenging both FERC’s constitutionality as a regulatory agency and its approval of the Spectra pipeline. The move marks the next step in the city’s legal fight against the pipeline. Stop spectra's (Long-Haul Transportation), Gas Pipeline In NJ And NY!

Jersey City's long- standing Opposition to the spectra gas pipeline. There is no doubt the proposed line could imperil invaluable natural habitats, precious and diverse ecosystems, billions of dollars in economic infrastructure, and the more than a quarter million residents of Jersey City”. Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy,
We have to stop spectra now!

The proposed pipeline route; Bayonne, Jersey City, Hoboken and across the Hudson River, past the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, within close proximity of the Holland Tunnel to Manhattan's West Village.

We have to stop spectra now!

You know, I know someone's crazy to allow a gas transportation pipeline here.

New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection NJDEP

spectra corporation and others like it are and have been claiming eminent domain all over the US. What a racket!

List of US National Historic Landmarks By State

spectra loses. spectra cannot claim eminent domain on Federally protected sites like this. Isn't this the reason for having Federally protected land?

No one can claim eminent domain regarding Federally designated Historical areas. They might try to pull that on the environmentalists. But that Federal Historical status, is set in stone

Only thing; in Jersey City, for spectra to enter along their proposed route, they would have to cross the historic Morris Canal, (filled in). This is not only, one of the areas totally destroyed by hurricane sandy, but it is a Federally Protected environmental area and is, also and a Federally Protected Historical Site National Register of Historic Places Official Website

Even; after all the destruction and flooding from hurricane sandy, federal agencies are still, allowing spectra gas, to continue with their proposed pipeline! Jersey City agency grants easement to spectra energy; City Councilman objects December 05, 2012 by Terrence T McDonald/The Jersey Journal

I don't even want to imagine what a tidal surge wave storm like sandy would do to spectra's proposed pipeline! It's only placed a few feet underground.

(There was a link to a frequently asked questions page, but they took it off. Too damning. It might still be somewhere on the website). spectra operations

question-Can crops be planted over a pipeline?
answer-Seasonal crops may be planted over the company's pipelines. While planting and tending the crops, you should take care in tilling and plowing not to damage the pipeline.

Thank You Mayor Healy!

I also remember how they chased you out of town just because you were Gypsies. Then you came back and now you own the entire block, (both sides of the street). Good for you.

[Update June 25 2012] Gas Main Ruptured! Pressure on ruptured gas main on Jersey City-Bayonne border is reduced, but repairs are ongoing. by Ron Zeitlinger/The Jersey Journal

This is the area, where spectra wants to cut across the east side of the Bayonne/Jersey City Border to go to New York City. That's why their gas pipeline goes under Liberty State Park. Preservation Also, I'm sure I read in one of these links under the Statue of Liberty, but can't find it now).

The problem is; that the eastern border of Bayonne And Jersey City is a peninsula and used to be a canal 100 years ago.

Not very stable earth.
Jersey City, New Jersey (See map). Hudson County under severe thunderstorm watch Saturday July 28, 2012 by Travis Fedschun/The Jersey Journal Areas like Hoboken and parts of Jersey City are urged to take special precautions because they are prone to flooding.

That's exactly where the Morris Canal was.

The Morris Canal stretched from Phillipsburg on the Delaware River at its western end to Jersey City on the Hudson River at its eastern end.

Building even more gas pipeline in this area is an ecological disaster, just waiting to happen.

One good explosion like in Nyack; (Heaven Forbid) and the whole area could break up and sink! [Update June 22 2012 Jersey City mayor says natural-gas explosion in Nyack is 'perfect example of dangers of spectra pipeline by Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal

Not kidding. Peninsulas are fragile. Especially an area where a canal has been filled in.

paenīnsula "paene-": almost + "īnsula": island; also called a byland or biland) is a piece of land that is bordered by water on three sides but connected to mainland.

spectra energy is seeking to rip the residents of New Jersey off, with  a 20-year lease on a nearly an acre of parkland that will house the pipe.

The company, which received final federal approval for the pipeline on May 21, plans to pay the state about $2.3 million over the course of the lease. by Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal

Somebody's gotta be kidding!
The More I Find Out, the more I Know, that I was right in thinking this pipeline is a bad idea! It's not a good plan to run pipeline along shorelines and in densely populated areas.

What we need to do is replace and repair our old pipelines, not bring in more.

I definitely would not let spectra destroy the few remaining non-industrial parts of Jersey City!

NASA Temperature Data: 1880-2011

The comparison shows how Earth continues to experience higher temperatures than several decades ago.

The global average surface temperature in 2011 was the ninth warmest since 1880.

The finding sustains a trend that has seen the 21st century experience nine of the 10 warmest years in the modern meteorological record.

NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York released an analysis of how temperatures around the globe in 2011 compared to the average global temperature from the mid-20th century.

Rising sea levels are also a good reason not to allow spectra energy to build this pipeline on our NJ/NY coastlines.
